The Village of Manlius is seeking a proactive and dependable Labor Crew Leader to join our Department of Public Works. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for supervising a small team, coordinating daily operations, and ensuring that public works projects are completed efficiently, safely, and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Public Works Superintendent with day-to-day operations and assume supervisory duties in their absence.
- Plan, prioritize, and assign projects to crew members; oversee quality of work and adherence to safety standards.
- Lead and participate in maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, storm drainage, parks, playgrounds, and village facilities.
- Perform and oversee landscaping, tree trimming, planting, snow removal, debris cleanup, and related tasks.
- Operate and maintain heavy equipment, vehicles, and tools (e.g., loaders, skid steer, excavator, sweeper, tractors, mowing equipment).
- Possession of Excavator Certification is required to perform excavation duties in accordance with New York State General Business Law. Certification must be obtained during the probationary period. Training will commence upon appointment. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.
- Conduct and document procurement of materials, work orders, project records, and annual inventory.
- Perform skilled trades work (carpentry, plumbing, electrical) as needed.
- Provide training, feedback, and performance input for crew members.
- Respond to emergencies, including inclement weather, natural disasters and occasional help with after-hours events.
Qualifications
- High school diploma (associate degree preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role (preferred).
- Knowledge of construction trades, equipment operation, landscaping, and facility maintenance.
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and computer skills; ability to work effectively with staff and the public.
- Mandatory: Valid NYS CDL B license.
- Preferred: NYS pesticide applicator license.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, and overtime when required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 100 lbs occasionally and perform physical labor outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to operate equipment safely and inspect work for accuracy and completeness.
Other Requirements
- Successful completion of a medical examination, background check, and drug screening.
- Participation in random drug testing program.
